Abstract

Modern commercial strategy frequently overemphasizes emotional brand loyalty while neglecting physical and mental availability. Applying the empirical laws developed by the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, this study measures brand salience and category entry points (CEPs) across 80 retail clusters in Bangladesh. The findings confirm that market share growth is predominantly driven by expanding customer reach and distinctive brand assets rather than deep brand love among existing buyers.

“
"Brands do not grow by converting customers into fanatical brand advocates; they grow by ensuring they are the easiest to think of and easiest to buy during purchase occasions."

1. The Fallacy of Brand Loyalty

Traditional marketing literature teaches that retaining existing customers is 5x cheaper than acquiring new ones. While retention is critical for operating cash flow, brand scale in FMCG and consumer retail requires continuous penetration into light and non-buyers.

In empirical retail tests, 70% of an enterprise brand's revenue stems from light buyers who purchase once or twice a year. If a brand ceases to build mental availability among this majority, category decline is mathematically guaranteed.

2. Category Entry Points (CEPs) Framework

Buyers do not search for brand names in isolation; they experience situational triggers. We evaluated five primary Category Entry Points across consumer retail:

  • Urgent Convenience: Immediate impulse satisfaction.
  • Social Affirmation: Hosting guests or peer gift-giving.
  • Functional Reliability: High-stakes performance with zero tolerance for failure.
  • Budget Defense: Maximizing utility per unit expenditure.
  • Health & Purity: Premium ingredient reassurance.

Brands that link their sensory codes to 3 or more CEPs achieved a 2.4x higher unprompted recall in retail environments compared to single-angle competitors.

3. Distinctive Brand Assets (DBAs)

To build durable mental availability, commercial organizations must institutionalize consistent sensory codes:

  1. Palette Codes: Dominant color identifiers preserved across decades.
  2. Typography Signals: Signature typeface geometry.
  3. Packaging Silhouette: Instantly identifiable physical contours on crowded retail shelves.

4. Conclusion & Strategic Guidance

Marketing executives must transition from campaign-focused novelty to consistent distinctive asset management. The highest-converting brand is not the most creative—it is the one that minimizes cognitive retrieval friction.
