The Trap of the 'Better' Product

Most founders launch a product believing that having 20% better features, 10% faster shipping, or a slightly cleaner UI will win the market. This is a fatal misconception. In the mind of the consumer, 'better' implies you belong in the same category as the incumbent—and the incumbent already owns the category mental shelf.

When you claim to be better, you validate the incumbent's rules. You force the customer to evaluate you along the leader's home turf.

“
"Category kings do not compete for an existing slice of the pie; they redraw the boundaries of the pie so that substitutes look obsolete."

The 3 Pillars of Category Design

  1. Name the Missing Problem: People do not buy solutions until they understand the pain of the existing status quo. Articulate a non-obvious friction point that everyone is tolerating.
  2. Introduce the New Category Label: Do not call yourself an 'advanced CRM' or 'premium skincare'; introduce a distinct commercial classification that makes old solutions feel outdated.
  3. Establish Category POV (Point of View): A category POV is a manifesto that declares what the world looks like now, why the old way failed, and why your approach is the only rational choice.

Capturing 76% of Total Industry Profits

Data from Harvard Business Review and Play Bigger shows that in almost every technology and consumer category, the Category King captures approximately 76% of the market capitalization and profit pool. The remaining 24% is bitterly divided among dozens of runner-up competitors fighting price wars.

If you want defensible enterprise valuation, stop competing. Design the category.
